Bishop - His Grace Rev Joseph Mar Thomas

Mar Thomas

Abridged History

The Malankara Catholic Church entered a new phase in its growth as some of our families settled in Europe, especially in Germany, during the early sixties. Malankara Priests, Seminarians and Religious came to Europe for studies and Pastoral work as per the direction of their respective Bishops. These Priests and Religious initiated mission activities by visiting the families
and celebrating the Holy Qurbono on important occasions. Eventually prayer groups were formed in different parts of Europe. Visiting Bishops and Priests used to celebrate the Holy Qurbono according to the request of our people. Consequently His Grace Most Rev. Benedict Mar Gregorios appointed Msgr. John Varghese Eswarankudiyil as the first Co-ordinator of the Malankara mission in 1996. During his tenure the Malankara missions in Germany grew steadily. Following this, the first Apostolic Visitor of North America and Europe, His Excellency Isaac Mar Cleemis visited European missions in the year 2002 and further strengthened the development of these missions.

New Apostolic Visitor:

The new Apostolic Visitor His Excellency Joseph Mar Thomas visited extensively the Malankara communities of Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Britain and Austria in July 2005 and made arrangements for constituting a Pastoral Council and general statutes for the missions. During the second week of August 2006 election to the Pastoral Council was completed. The first meeting of the Pastoral Council and second meeting of the Synodal Commission for Outside India missions were jointly held in Bonn on 30 September and 1 October 2006. About 200 delegates from missions and religious congregations participated in the two-day conference and ratified the Pastoral Council elections and its general statutes. Delegates from North America and Gulf Countries too attended the function. Today the Malankara Catholic Major Archiepiscopal Church in Europe is growing and is coordinated under the guidance of Bishop Joseph Mar Thomas and Cor-Episcopo Geevarghese Mannikkarott.
