About MCYMMalankara Catholic Youth Movement (MCYM) the official youth wing of Malankara Catholic Church started in 1971, under the intrepid directorship of Rev.Fr. Dominic Skariah with the benediction of our beloved late Most Rev. Bishop Benedict Mar Gregorios in Thiruvananthapuram Diocese. The inner drive behind the formation of this movement was to develop the Malankara youth in spirituality and faith in the context of catholic teachings and beliefs, thereby making the foundation of the church stronger. Such a movement first flourished in the middle part of Kerala in tone with all activities of the church.
Meanwhile, in Thiruvalla Diocese, a youth movement was profoundly developed in another name. Our Bishops' foresight to integrate the whole Malankara youth under one roof paved the way for renaming this movement as MCYM in Thiruvalla Diocese. Establishment of Bathery Diocese in 1978 and Marthamdom Diocese in 1996 rejuvenated MCYM activities in these regions.
Though MCYM established itself incredibly in its respective regions yet, it lacked the coordination to perform as a cohesive unit. The youth movement activities were scattered in different dioceses within Kerala, outside of Kerala, and abroad till 1990. The aspiration for coordination got a new lease of life in 1990 with the formation of the Central Secretariat, which is considered as an important milestone in MCYM history. And in 1992 September 20, the new MCYM constitution came into force. Central Secretariat initiated several steps within short span to reclaim the youth activities, which had reached up to its optimum, especially in MCCIETR Regions. This lead to more cooperation among MCCIETR Regions and considered every MCCIETR Region equivalent to Diocese under its new constitution and this bestowed a new boost to MCYM activities in MCCIETR.
MCCIETR activities gathered momentum with the appointment of Rev.Dr. John Berchmans OIC as coordinator in December 1997 by Most.Rev. Cyril Mar Baselios. He initiated several steps to revitalize the MCYM activities in these regions. Most remarkable was the formation of a structural body of MCCIETRs in March 2001. Similarly various programs are conducted by the youths across the length and breadth of the world outside India like USA, Canada, Germany and Kuwait. This clearly demonstrates the enthusiasm of Malankara youths in these parts of world to stick on to their own roots, i.e., rites and tradition, even though they grew up in a different culture.
